Overview The Smithsonian Institution seeks a Supervisory Museum Curator Art in the Knowledge Production department of the National Museum of African Art (NMAFA). This position leads the knowledge production function for a 21st century Global African Art Museum, drawing on African epistemologies and decolonization practices. Responsibilities Lead and supervise the knowledge production department including curators, curatorial assistants, contract fellows, residents, interns, editor, translator. Initiate, develop, and coordinate original research projects in collaboration with internal and external scholars, communities, artists, institutions, and others in Africa and the diaspora. Conceptualize, coordinate and deliver exhibitions and related experiences (focused exhibitions, pop-ups, large complex projects, digital experiences) involving institutional and private loans and collaborations. Coordinate and develop programming and scholarly output associated with Knowledge Production, including collection research, publications (exhibition text, catalogues, monographs, magazines), and public programs. Oversee acquisitions for NMAFA and collaborate with staff to propose objects for acquisition through purchase or gift. Qualifications Qualifications must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Education and experience requirements include: Basic Education: Degree in museum work or applicable field; or combination of education and experience; or four years of equivalent experience. Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal Service, involving managing curatorial functions, overseeing research, exhibitions, collections development, and related public programs; conducting scholarly research and producing work or exhibitions related to African art; participating in public engagement and proposing acquisitions. Education must be accredited by a recognized accrediting institution (if relying on education to meet qualifications). You will be evaluated based on competencies such as leadership, knowledge of African art collections and networks, experience in organizing exhibitions, and research methodologies.
