As a Nutritionist, you will provide clinical and nutritional assessment, education, counseling, and services to participants in the Women, Infants, and Children Supplemental Food Program (WIC). Maintain patient/client confidentiality and ensures compliance HIPAA and WIC policy and procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Screens, assesses, and evaluates client’s nutritional status during client interview.

-Determines eligibility of clients for WIC Program based on nutritional status.

-Performs heights, weight measurements, as well as hemoglobin.

-Documents summary of dietary assessment, client goals and plans in client record.

-May be required to screen applicants for income eligibility in the WIC program.

Verifies applicant residency, income, identification, and Medicaid status. Completes and

reviews client registration information for participant’s electronic WIC record and sets up EBT

accounts

-Ensures certification documents and other records are accurate and complete prior to submission.

-Maintains documentation in client’s electronic record according to WIC guidelines.

-Issues required notification to ineligible participants.

  • Provides a Patient Centered nutrition counseling approach and education to WIC clients

-Counsels high-risk participants on an individual basis.

-When appropriate, provides diet planning, counseling, and instruction to other WIC clients on individual and group basis at various Clinic locations correlating nutrition needs with general health status, culture patterns, personal preferences, and economic factors.

  • Promotes breastfeeding to prenatals. Works with postpartum clients who are experiencing difficulties with breastfeeding.

-Makes referrals to lactation consultant as needed.

  • Provides referrals to community programs for specialized nutrition services/food assistance and other referrals as needed.
  • Consults with multi-disciplinary team to assure continuity of care between programs and a comprehensive health care plan.
  • Participates in follow-up care of clients, including by telephone, when appropriate.

-Maintains documentation on all contacts made with WIC clients.

  • Actively participates in efforts to maintain and/or increase Clinic’s assigned caseload.
  • Meets or exceeds individual productivity goals on a daily basis.
  • Participates in health fairs and community outreach as assigned.
  • Prepares lesson plans, visual aids, bulletin boards, pamphlets, and literature useful for nutrition education/classes.
  • Checks email on a regular basis to remain current on any changes that may impact nutrition department activities.
  • Attends and participates in meetings and inservices as required. Participates in professional development activities. Serves on committees as requested.
  • Performs duties in accordance with NHC Standards of Conduct and Mission Statement.
  • Performs related work as required and other duties (similar physical requirements and OSHA risk level) as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS / ABILITIES

  • Nutrition – demonstrates a current, accurate knowledge base of nutrition and dietary principles and assessment techniques (anthropometric, biochemical, clinical, and dietary); skilled in developing nutrition plans and counseling techniques for effecting change in client’s dietary behavior; maintains knowledge of, and acts in accordance with, current NHC policies and procedures.

  • Computer – proficient in the use of practice management software to efficiently and accurately retrieve/record client data.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education / Training

Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Dietetics, Nutrition or Nutrition Sciences, Public Health Nutrition, Community Nutrition, or Clinical Nutrition.

Experience

A minimum of one year of teaching experience maternal and child health or public health setting preferred.

Licensure/Certification

Prefer Registry Dietitian Eligible (RDE). CPR certification as required by NHC.

Physical Requirements

Prolonged sitting, infrequent to occasional walking or standing. Requires full range of body motion, manual dexterity, and eye-hand coordination sufficient to assist clients and operate office/electronic equipment. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports. Requires ability to lift and carry items weighting up to 35 lbs. Requires exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids. Requires ability to work under stressful conditions.

Work Environment

Normal clinic environment and offsite in various types of environments. Work may involve irregular hours, including evenings or weekends. Requires traveling outdoors in all types of weather. Involves frequent contact with other staff, physicians’ offices, and clients. Contact may involve dealing with sick, angry, or upset people. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, and other conditions common to a Clinic environment. OSHA Category I – Tasks involve contact with blood or body substances.
