Overview The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in the National Air and Space Museum (NASM). The NASM Aeronautical Department is responsible for all curatorial duties in its field such as research, acquisition, and management of collections, exhibits, publications, and public service. Duties Conduct independent technical research on the history of aerospace engineering and the aerospace industry resulting in publications in peer‑reviewed journals or books. Serve as a curator to include managing and interpreting artifacts associated with the history of aerospace engineering and the aerospace industry. Develop exhibits, especially as related to the history of aerospace engineering and the aerospace industry. Prepare technical reports in writing as well as oral presentations to the staff and public and digital outreach on the Museum and its collection. Foster relationships across the organization to enhance attention to the history of aerospace engineering and the aerospace industry. Qualifications All Applicants must meet these Basic Requirements (you must submit academic transcripts): Degree: museum work; or in an applicable subject-matter field. Or combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Or four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the 4-year course of study. For GS‑11: Specialized Experience: one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS‑9 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. This experience is defined as researching the history of aerospace engineering and the aerospace industry and preparing written technical reports and presentations related to the aerospace industry. Or Education: Three full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. Or Combination: Education and experience may be combined to meet the basic qualifications. For GS‑12: Specialized Experience: one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS‑11 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. This experience is defined as developing, implementing and coordinating independent research related to the history of aerospace engineering and the aerospace industry. For GS‑13: Specialized Experience: one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS‑12 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. This experience is defined as conducting historical research on aspects of the aerospace industry; managing a museum’s collection of aerospace engineering and technology artifacts; and developing exhibit plans, research and documentation related to the aerospace industry. Experience includes paid and unpaid work, including volunteer service; volunteers may receive credit for qualifying experience. Part‑time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered for total experience. Education must be from institutions accredited by accrediting bodies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Additional information This position is not included in the bargaining unit.
