Under the leadership of the Fleet Manager, the Assistant Fleet Manager is responsible for assisting in the daily operations of Charles County Public Schools' transportation services, including oversight of school bus drivers, route coordination, and support of fleet maintenance operations. This position plays a key role in ensuring safe, timely, and efficient student transportation while maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local transportation regulations.
High School Diploma or equivalent required
Current CDL Class B License with P and S Endorsements
Minimum of five (5) years of related experience
Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience
Experience managing school bus drivers and overseeing routing operations in a transportation environment
Excellent communication and human relations skills in situations that require a high degree of sensitivity, tact, and diplomacy
Excellent technical and organizational skills when using electronic record keeping and fleet management systems to manage fleet assets and monitor/report on statistical data
Proficient in the use of a computer with the ability to understand and administer a computerized client/server fleet management system and a computerized fuel management system
Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of fleet management, hazards and safety precautions of large-scale operations, business practices applicable to fleet management, budget and accounting principles and procedures, and preventive maintenance inspection methods and procedures
Comprehensive knowledge of existing and proposed state, local, and federal laws, regulations, rules, and standards affecting vehicle use, maintenance, inspection, and specifications
Expert ability to identify employee and stakeholder concerns and address those matters appropriately and in a timely manner
Ability to establish effective working relationships and emphasize the department's goal of customer service in all aspects of work
Provide direct oversight of school bus drivers and attendants, ensuring adherence to safety standards, operational schedules, and assigned routes
Supervise the scheduling and coordination of daily school bus routes and make necessary adjustments for coverage and efficiency
Monitor driver attendance, performance, and compliance with training, licensing, and safety requirements
Address routing and personnel issues, including responding to breakdowns, delays, or incidents
Work closely with the routing team to plan and revise bus routes based on student enrollment, school locations, and road conditions
Assist the Fleet Manager in supporting school bus maintenance operations and coordinating with garage staff
Monitor compliance with federal, state, and local transportation regulations
Assist with fuel tracking and the fuel tax reimbursement program
Support the planning for acquisition, maintenance, and disposal of transportation assets
Participate in the preparation of budget submissions, including projections for driver staffing and overtime
Input and manage work orders in fleet management systems (e.g., School Dude), research work history, and ensure timely completion of maintenance tasks
Respond to operational emergencies during and after normal work hours, dispatching appropriate personnel as needed
Participate in the hiring process, onboarding, and training of transportation staff
Conduct or contribute to annual performance evaluations for assigned employees
Provide weekly reports to the Fleet Manager regarding staffing, routing updates, and vehicle availability
Provide high-quality service to internal departments, external agencies, and the public regarding transportation-related concerns
Perform other duties as assigned by the Fleet Manager
The environmental factors and/or physical requirements of this position include the following: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 1050 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard.
